About your surgery |
Modern surgery offers a wide range of procedures which are often of a healing nature. Surgery, however constitutes an acute traumatic assault on the body with associated derangements of the homeostatic mechanisms. During surgery the Anaesthetist is the peri-operative specialist with knowledge of a wide range of surgical and medical conditions and the influence of these on the physiology of the human body. Your surgery may be minor and uncomplicated. Certain operations are complicated and diseases like Diabetes, coronary artery disease, kidney and lung disease etc. can complicate the procedure. It is helpful and reassuring to remember that the operating theatre is a highly controlled environment with dedicated staff and modern equipment making it inherently a safe place to be! Despite all complicating factors, planned surgery is completed, the patient recovers comfortably and is sent home a few days later in the vast majority of cases. |
